WHAT IS A HYDROLATE?
A hydrosol , also known as herbal water or herbal distillate , is a product of the artisanal steam distillation process of plants, also used for the extraction of essential oils. While essential oils are concentrated and oily, hydrosols are water-based and contain the water-soluble compounds of the plant, the cellular water of the plant cells, and many other components. It is a pure form of transmitting the “information” of the plant.
Characteristics of a Hydrolate:
- Gentle : Hydrosols are more gentle than essential oils, making them suitable for use directly on the skin.
- Aromatic : They have a light and delicate aroma from the plant of origin, although less intense than that of the essential oil.
- Therapeutic Properties : They retain many of the beneficial properties of the plant, such as anti-inflammatory, calming or moisturizing effects.
- Versatile : Can be used in skin care, as a facial mist, in aromatherapy, in cooking, in beverages, in medicinal and spiritual applications to connect with the wisdom of the plant, in immersion baths and foot baths.
Common Uses:
- Skin Care : Used as a toner, cleanser or ingredient in natural cosmetics.
- Aromatherapy : Sprayed into rooms or fabrics to create a calming atmosphere.
- First Aid : Applied to minor cuts, burns or irritations for soothing effects.
- Cooking : Some hydrolates, such as rose water and orange blossom water, are used in culinary recipes.
- Spiritual : Connect with the plant by spraying, smelling and drinking it mixed with water to receive its medicinal and spiritual benefits.
Hydrolates are valued for their natural and delicate quality, making them an excellent choice for those looking for plant-based solutions.
